How’s everyone doing? If you’re like me, perhaps, things are looking up. When I was going back a week or two thinking about where to take my latest LYL Radio mix, I kept looking at all the music I’ve gravitated towards to lately, and all of it was seemed joyful. So I thought: “there’s something there”.
Not to engage into too much navel-gazing, but ever since my dad passed away recently, I’ve been stuck in-between two worlds. In one world was the lingering sadness that’s impossible to shake completely off.
Like a dull pain, bouts with malaise and longing come to me, coloring quiet times with shades of gray. It’s time like these that I struggle to connect fully with these emotions. That’s that world. Then I have this other world.
In this other world, I look for and latch on to things that bring me some kind of positivity in my life. And I don’t know about you, it’s when I get to have these kind of experiences that I feel a different kind of overwhelming feeling — enough to evoke to tears of joy. Beautiful days are just full of these fleeting moments that, at the moment, I can’t stop coming back for more of.
For me it took something like revisiting the music of Burt Bacharach (another great we lost recently), in some personal, weird, darker time, that compelled me express just how powerful, seemingly, simple expressions of love can be. Then, I heard a throughline in the similarly brilliant music of Singapore’s Dick Lee or and bulbs went off, I found there what I was looking for. As tacky as it sounds, you’ll never get rainbows without a bit of sun and rain…hopefully, something this mix attests to…
