Here’s the space where I place profound thoughts on whatever latest mix I’ve done for you. Normally, that’s the case. However, today (and with this latest mix) I felt I had to create something that felt weightless in a distinct way from a prior mix. On my latest Digging Deep mix for LYL Radio, I thought now would be the perfect time to go deep into the well of Balearic music, in search of a new canon.
Whether by choice (mostly) or by neglect (sometimes) these are the tracks I felt were never quite right to inject elsewhere. Whether the timing was wrong — being too hot or too (whatever last year’s COVID-injected summer was)… — these songs commanded a certain atmosphere and a certain attention that seemed out of place any other time of the year.
Here you can find the sun-soaked electro-pop of Japan’s Tabo’s Project and the safari-minded, afro-samba-tinged exploration of their fellow countrymen 4°C. Here you can find the longform Mediterranean improvisatory ambient of Italy’s Riccardo Giagni and intricate impressionist guitar of Switzerland’s Andreas Von Wangenheim.
Its music for floating out to sea rather than out in space (or inside your concrete walls). While parking your body next to a cool body of water, this is the kind of music looking beyond the small borders found on land, towards the largest expanses we’ll ever truly explore. As we explore thoughts of a different kind of flotation, shouldn’t music find a way to meet it (in some kind of meridian)?
Hopefully, this is what floats that boat for you…
