Sometimes I have very heady mixes to send over to my friends at LYL Radio. Seriously high-falutin stuff, that right before I hit “Send”, even I have to stop myself and rethink a bit. “You know someone’s going to have to listen to these”, I say to myself before I click the button. It’s those times I flip the script and completely scrap a mix (or save it for another time) that you get something like what you’ll hear today.
You see, sometimes I just want to take you through a certain mood. For this mix, I kept thinking of these things (weirdly enough): toxic masculinity, vulnerability, and gender fluidity. I kept thinking of how great dance pop music has a lot of layers one can latch onto. And in the hands of its true masters can be used for the greater good. “If only they realized, what they’re bobbing their heads along to.”, I think. Revolutionary/rebellious stuff has a very subversive way of sneaking right in front of you. But how does one broach those topics without bludgeoning someone with your sermons?
So, once again, I’ll go back to the well of “…someone’s going to…listen to [this]” and go for something far more elemental. If this mix is going to hit you, it has to do it both ways.
What’s here are seriously provocative ideas couched first as dance music and then as that nebulous “pop” music that really wants to give you some escape. Escaping environmental catastrophe, averting oppressive regimes, and accepting one’s own skin (cognizant of how hard it can be in doing so) are some of the topics broached here.
A wise man once said: “What dreames may come, When we haue shufflel’d off this mortall coile, Must giue vs pawse.” While another put it much clearer: “I danced myself out of the womb, Is it strange to dance so soon?” In other words: save the last dance for me…
