Rather than belabor you with nonsense trying to rectify itself as a theme, I’d rather rectify something I didn’t do last year: share my special hour-long Halloween mix for LYL Radio. For those that tuned in, you were treated to one of my deepest loves: British Folk Rock. Today I’m taking it a bit further.
For an hour, I gave you a peek into music I believe has created some of the most hair-raising moments in music — one that inspired this blog many a time ago. It was an hour long peek into some truly inspiring literary musical tradition. In the music of Pentangle, Comus, Fairport Convention (amongst many others), there has always been that strong lineage of tying very human stories — perhaps some that are truly ancient, universal, and terrifying — couched through music that weaves many disparate emotions into one arresting vision after another.
It still boggles my mind that a lot of what you’re about to hear has never been reissued, let alone released, outside of England and within the time period it existed.
A long time ago, this whole blog took a very long sojourn trying to outline this neofolk music — for fear of it being entirely forgotten. Now, I think it’s time for me to revisit this mix (perhaps giving you a director’s cut) drawing out the devilish power others would do well to rediscover and take steps to (perhaps) take even further.
In this witching hour, I hope you’re ready to fold in another…
